What is ServSafe?
ServSafe is a food safety training and certification course developed by the National Restaurant Association. SYSCO Corporation is a national sponsor of the program.

Why take ServSafe?
The new Food Code adopted by the Minnesota Department of Health (effective July 1, 2000) requires that all food service establishments employ at least one full-time manager or supervisor that has taken a sanitation course and passed a certification test in order to maintain their food and beverage license. The ServSafe course and test is approved by the MN Dept. of Health as meeting this requirement.

How to Register:
Complete the registration form by printing the form, identifying your chosen course date, and then mail or fax it to Colleen Zenk at 763-785-7568. You can also call the Registration Hotline at 763-795-5812. Registration deadline is two weeks prior to the class start date. Course book and specific location information will be sent out to registrants approximately ten days before the class starts. Those who read the course book prior to class score better on the exam and are more likely to pass. Classes taught in Spanish are also available.

Cost:
$145 per person for SYSCO Minnesota customers; $135 per person for SYSCO Club members; $170 per person for non-customers. This includes course book and testing fee. A check must accompany registration if business is not a SYSCO Minnesota customer. Make checks payable to SYSCO Minnesota. Course fee can be billed to SYSCO Minnesota customers. No refund once course materials have been mailed. A 72 hour notice is required for rescheduling. Rescheduling is subject to a $30 fee.

Re-certification fee is $65 per person for SYSCO Customers; $55 per person for SYSCO Club members; $75 for non-customers.

Course Format:
ServSafe is offered in a one-day format for a total of 8 hours of classroom instruction. The test takes approximately one additional hour. Continental breakfast and lunch included.

Re-Certification Class:
Participants in this class must have taken the initial 8-hour class, passed the exam, and be registered with the MN Dept. of Health to be eligible for this class. Initial certification is for 3 years. New books are neither provided or included in the class fee, but may be purchased for an additional $68 at class time. Registration deadline is one week prior to class date.

Scoring of the Test:
The test is 90 questions. A score of 67 (75%) is needed to pass. Tests are electronically scored and the results are received in approximately 3 weeks. A certificate of completion and MDH application form is sent to each participant. It is the responsibility of each person to apply for certification with the Minnesota Department of Health.
